EUREKA SPRINGS became popular in 1879 after Dr. Jackson revealed the source of his famous "Dr. Jackson's Eyewater" and advised his good friend, Judge L.B. Saunders of Berryville to try the springs to heal a bad case of skin disease. It worked!!! The positive results gained from the springs spread and EUREKA SPRINGS became a resort almost overnight.
The springs at EUREKA SPRINGS brought in tourists as well as people with health afflictions with the result that profitable businesses of hotels, saloons, bathhouses, dry goods stores, groceries and liveries sprang up. The attraction of the springs also brought the investors and the railroad. At the turn of the century the nation began to develop nostalgia for a more wholesome type of life. EUREKA SPRINGS became a perfect environment for artists, writers, and country themes.
